Of all the four letter words in the English language, BYOB is one of my favorites (Shut up. I know it’s an acronym). Anyway, the Smoke Shack has this cool BYOB policy so you can sit around, smoke a hookah, and just chill with some cheap beer or wine or whatever. Read the rest of this entry »

Cinco de Mayo @ Yacht Club

When Erika dropped off the photos from Yacht Club this week, my first question was “what’s up with the sombreros?”. I actually forgot that May 5th = Cinco de Mayo. For the record, I failed Spanish in high school so there ya’ go. Read the rest of this entry »
Eeyore’s Birthday Party in Austin
Every April, Austin locals gather to celebrate Eeyore’s birthday. Yes, that Eeyore. The sad little donkey from the Winnie the Pooh books by A. A. Milne. The tradition was started in 1963 by a group of english students from the University of Texas and the party’s gotten bigger every year. Much, much bigger. Read the rest of this entry »
The Onion
The Onion - which bills itself as America’s Finest News Source - is a weekly online publication where all of the “news” is basically stuff they just made up. And not just any kind of stuff, but the smart and funny kind of stuff that makes you go “oh…that is soooo true”, except that it’s not.
And if there’s one thing funnier about this site than it’s content, it’s the fact that the Beijing Evening News once reprinted an article from the Onion believing it to be legitimate journalism. Those kooky communists.
Vice
Have you ever worn something to a club that was, shall we say, experimental? You know, an ensemble on the bleeding edge of fashion.
Were people extra-nice to you, like you were “special”? Yeah? Did you think it was because you looked uber-trendy? Hmm… Did you give any consideration to the idea that everyone thought you were retarded?
Find out for sure at Viceland.com, the online version of Vice Magazine, and home of the DOs and DON’Ts - hilariously scathing commentary and outright ridicule of the fashion challenged.
Hey, it’s fun to laugh at people in silly clothes.
Mango’s Pics are online
Mangos pics are online!
I’ve gotta say this is probably one of my favorite photo sets just because everyone looks like they’re having a blast. Except me…because I was stuck at home that night. Dammit! Samantha gets to have all the fun.
Anyway, shout outs to Kim, Paul, Trisha, and Erica (where the hell have you been?) since you’re the only people in the pictures I can recognize by name.
Don’t forget, you can send your favorite RGV Live gallery photos to your phone by pressing Alt on your keyboard and clicking on the picture.
Pandora
Tired of fumbling through radio stations trying to find something you actually like? Oh yeah. You definitely need to check out Pandora.
It works like this: Specify an artist or song to start with and Pandora selects similar songs to add to your playlist. You tell it what you like and what you don’t like and Pandora customizes your playlists (called stations) accordingly.
Add different stations for different types of music. One last thing, Pandora is free!
What I did for my Spring Break Vacation
In case you were wondering, we totally blew off Texas Week at SPI this year in favor of the South by Southwest (SXSW) music conference in Austin, Texas (more on that in a moment).
It’s funny but the whole photo series started to look more or less like a road trip scrapbook, so I kinda’ just went with that and attached a barely coherent essay to go with it. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

An essay by Darel Parker
RGV Clubs Road Trippin’ 101
——————————————–
One of the first things I learned when I started attending South by Southwest (SXSW) way back in 1995 is that you can always find free beer and free music, often in the same place. The music isn’t always good, but after a few beers, you won’t even care. Read the rest of this entry »
